Becoming: For Boys of Determination and Their Parent

His body is starting to change, and for a boy who needs things explained clearly,
calmly, and in the right order, puberty can feel confusing or even frightening.
This is a short, gentle session where he hears what’s happening from a specialist,
with you sitting beside him, so the conversation starts here and continues at home
in your own words.

Becoming: Through Puberty is a parent-and-son session designed specifically for
boys with autism entering puberty. Using simple language, visual supports, and
a calm pace, we explain body changes, privacy rules, hygiene routines, and
emotional awareness in a way that feels safe and understandable.

What We Cover

  • Understanding that body changes during puberty are normal and expected.
  • The main physical changes that occur during puberty, explained using clear language and simple visuals.
  • Private and public body parts, places, and behaviours.
  • Basic hygiene routines presented as practical step-by-step habits.
  • Managing new emotions and understanding who to ask when questions arise.

What We Do Not Cover

This session focuses solely on body awareness and preparation for puberty.
There is no adult content, relationship education, or material beyond what
boys at this age need to understand their changing bodies confidently and safely.

Is My Son Ready?

Age alone does not determine readiness. Your son may benefit from this session if:

  • He is approaching or entering puberty.
  • He can attend a short, visually-supported session with a parent present.
  • He has started noticing body changes or asking questions.
  • You would like him to receive accurate information before hearing it elsewhere.

When To Contact Us First

  • If he is significantly younger and showing no signs of puberty yet.
  • If a group setting may currently feel overwhelming.
  • If he is experiencing major emotional or behavioural challenges that may affect participation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do parents attend the session?

Children with autism often learn best through repetition and familiarity.
Parents remain in the room so they can continue these conversations confidently
at home using the same language and visual supports.

Will the content respect our family values?

Yes. The session is designed with modesty, respect, and family-centred values
in mind. Topics are presented clinically and appropriately for this age group.

What happens if my son needs a break?

That’s completely fine. The session is intentionally small, calm, and flexible.

What will we take home?

Parents receive a practical one-page guide covering the key concepts,
language, and routines discussed during the session.
