Becoming: A Journey Through Change for Boys (Delivered to Boys ages 9-12)

Your son’s body is about to change: his voice, his height, his moods, his world. The only question is who explains it to him first: you and a trusted professional, or the internet and the school playground?

Becoming is a 90-minute workshop where boys aged 9 – 12 learn what’s coming, why it happens, and how to handle it. The science of puberty, the daily hygiene habits, the big feelings and what to do with anger, respect for themselves and others, and how to stay safe. It’s taught by a male therapist, in a relaxed boys-only circle where no question is too embarrassing.

He leaves with answers, habits, and his own journal. You leave with a 15-minute private follow-up, a parent guide with the exact words to use at home, and a son who knows he can come to you.

What we cover  & what we don’t

Your son will learn

  •   Why puberty happens: the brain, hormones as ‘messengers’, and the order changes usually arrive in
  •   The physical changes: growth spurts and growing pains, voice change, skin, hair, sweat — and the hygiene routine that goes with them
  •   The private changes explained plainly, briefly and respectfully, so nothing ever frightens or shames him
  •   A short, respectful word about girls’ changes… so curiosity is answered and respect is built
  •   Healthy eating, movement and sleep for a growing body  and why online bodies aren’t real life
  •   Feelings and anger: where they come from, and tools that actually work for boys this age
  •   Friendship, family values and respect for elders. Growing up means more respect, not less
  •   Body safety: private is private, no uncomfortable secrets, and exactly who to tell

What we deliberately do NOT cover

This is body awareness and preparation, not sex education. There is no adult content, no relationships content, and no detail beyond what a 9-12 year old needs to feel prepared instead of surprised. Anything a boy asks that goes beyond this scope is parked, respectfully, for his parents. Parents may request the full session outline before the workshop… just ask.

Is my son ready? (Requirements to join)

Age alone doesn’t decide readiness. Here’s how to know if this is his time.

To join, your son should:

  •   Be between 9 and 12 years old
  •   Know, in one simple sentence, what the workshop is about : and be willing to come (we never recommend forcing it; see the one-liner below)
  •   Be able to spend 90 minutes in a small group without a parent in the room

Signs the timing is right (any one of these is enough):

  •   He’s started asking questions: about his body, his voice, why some friends are taller, where hair comes from
  •   You’ve noticed early changes: a growth spurt, body odour, mood swings, oilier skin
  •   His friends are changing, or he’s hearing half-true information at school and online
  •   He’s started wanting privacy: closing doors, shy about changing clothes
  •   You simply want him prepared before the changes arrive, instead of surprised by them

When to wait or message us first:

  •   He’s under 9, or shows no changes and no curiosity yet. It may be wiser to wait a round; message us and we’ll advise honestly
  •   He’s going through something heavy right now (loss, a bullying crisis, a recent trauma). A group setting may not be the right first step, and we can suggest what is
  •   He flatly refuses to attend. Don’t force it; message us for ways to soften the introduction, and join a later date

How to tell him about it (one calm line):

“It’s a workshop where a specialist explains how boys’ bodies grow and get stronger. You’ll learn what happens to your voice, your muscles, your moods. Just boys, no parents in the room, and you can ask anything.”

Not sure? That’s exactly what our WhatsApp is for. Tell us his age and what made you consider the workshop, and we’ll tell you honestly whether now is the right time even if the answer is ‘wait’.

Questions parents ask before signing up

Who teaches it?

a male therapist/facilitator. The session runs in Arabic or English, whichever you choose at sign-up.

Will the content respect our family’s values?

Yes. it’s built for our families. Respect for parents and elders runs through the whole session, body topics are named once, calmly and briefly, with family-comfortable language, and there is no adult content of any kind. You can request the full outline before the day.

What exactly will he be told about ‘private changes’?

That his body grows, that certain changes (like erections and wet dreams) are automatic, normal and private, and what to practically do… nothing more. The goal is simple: when it happens, he isn’t scared, and he knows he can talk to you.

What if my son is shy?

He never has to speak. There’s an anonymous question box where boys write questions on paper, no names, and we answer them together. Quiet boys often get the most out of the session.

Can I sit in?

Nope, and that’s deliberate. Boys speak freely when it’s just boys. Instead, every family gets a private 15-minute follow-up (in person right after, or online), plus a parent guide with everything covered and the exact words to continue at home.

Is what he says private?

What the boys share in the circle stays in the circle, that’s our promise to them, and it’s why they talk. The one exception is safety: if anything suggests a child is being harmed, we follow child-safety protocol and contact you.

What about girls, is there a version for my daughter?

Yes! Becoming runs as a separate girls’ workshop (ages 9-12) with a female facilitator. Link
